Irony

Irony

Irony is something that everyone experiences multiple times in life. There are three types if irony there's verbal irony, dramatic irony, and irony of a situation. Irony is a case where what was meant isn't what was portrayed in presentation. Irony can also be when something doesn't result in what it was expected to. The most common form of irony is irony of a situation as it happens most often in everyday life. An example of irony in my life is when i saw someone fall down the stairs and i laughed at them. Ironically, the next day i fell down the same exact steps and broke my arm.

The poem " Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is a direct representation of irony. The irony in the poem is irony of a situation. "And he was rich--yes, richer than a king" is a direct quote from the poem showing that Everyone thought that Richard Cory was wealthiest man alive so he was happy, when in fact that wasn't the case. He kills himself which shows the irony because it shows that he in fact wasn't as happy as what was portrayed and what everyone saw.

The article " The house that slaves built" caused controversy for me because it can either be dramatic irony or irony of a situation. I would say dramatic irony because blacks built the white house and weren't allowed in but all of these years later there is a black president Barack Obama and his family Residing there. That alone is a dramatic effect on the history of blacks. I also say irony of a situation because of the White House name "The WHITE House" which makes having a Black president a completely ironic situation.

In the short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl there was dramatic irony. It was dramatic irony because although the lady killed her husband the police were in her home and thought someone else committed the crime. It became even more ironic when she offered the police dinner because the dinner was the lamb that she used to kill her husband which made it even more so ironic when one of the officers said "they were sure the murder weapon was rite under they're noses."

Irony is shown in this Ironic cartoon when the teacher is teaching a lesson on time being an illusion and when a student walks in the teacher tells him he's late. Its ironic because the teachers lesson was about how time is just something that's in your head but he called the boy up on being late.

All of these links shows that irony is a case where what is meant isn't portrayed, or things not resulting in what they're expected to result in. Ironically I never thought of things to be ironic that were truly ironic until I started this essay now when things happen in my life I can see the irony in it. Whats going on in Japan right now is also a pretty ironic situation. Its ironic because it hasn't happend in over 60 years and now when it does it start to spark conversation and everyone who was never concerned before becomes extremely concerned
